Wireshark – Troubleshooting DHCP issues

Wireshark – Troubleshooting DHCP issues

Troubleshooting DHCP Issues from a computer This was an issue with a laptop that couldn’t connect to wifi. Every other computer and device worked fine. We started the initial troubleshooting with trying to test the wifi. Running Debugs on the WLC showed us that the computer attempted to connect but the failed to fully authenticate. We got wireshark running on the machine which was able to show us that the computer would perform a DHCP Request but would get nothing…

Home Lab

(This Home Lab Post may get separated into different posts for each section when I come back to clean up and edit) Getting Started: I’ve been working on putting a home lab together for awhile now. Open Source Monitoring Stack

Open Source Monitoring Stack

I had a need recently for an open source stack of monitoring software. This will include but not be limited to network monitoring and alerting, network device backup, logging of network and system logs via a syslog server, and possibly more. Above all syslog is priority currently, then network device backup, and monitor after that. The goal was to be able to drop host running a hypervisor. This could be running a handful of servers with each service into a…

VCP6.5-DCV

VCP6.5-DCV

This post will outline the course I took to obtain my VCP6.5-DCV. As of now I have about 8 years of experience in vmware products. I’m starting out with the below study guide and official cert guide. At the time of this post the VCP6 guides are the only ones available. I’m going to begin learning those and pickup any 6.5 material that comes out in the near future. I believe that the core information will be similar enough to…

Why knowing command line is important for any system administrator

Why knowing command line is important for any system administrator

I know this subject is touched on a lot and in a lot more depth than this will be. I wanted to give my two cents though. I recently had a peer who needed to migrate a group of VMs to another data store. For whatever reason they wouldn’t go because of the attached cd-rom drive had an ISO from the original data store attached. My co-worker asked me to help him out and go through and remove the cd-drive…

Prometheus Setup

Prometheus Setup

With every server setup there is a need to monitor it. Whether that be for network activity, CPU/Memory load, or just to aid in troubleshooting. After I had this WordPress site setup I turned to monitoring solutions. What I have so far is a Grafana + Prometheus + Node Exporter setup. With the help of alex ellis blog to understand how it works. Prometheus is the engine that scrapes metrics from a text webpage created with node exporter. This data source is…

Docker and WordPress setup

Docker and WordPress setup

The initial reason for setting up this site was to give myself a chance to learn. Linux, docker, web administration, and to keep a log of things I’ve learned or want to learn. There are typically easier ways to get a WordPress site started. Such as building one on the WordPress site, installing it using the famous 5-minute installation, using Plesk to install and manage WordPress, using cPanel, and plenty of others. This direction gave me the opportunity to play…
